Initiatives

BNC makes grants from pooled funds, and works closely with its members and partners to leverage private and public investment.  BNC staff and members provide leadership to the community development sector through participation in local and state government initiatives, and as board members and advisors to community-based and city-wide nonprofit organizations.

Currently BNC focuses on:

  • Advancing neighborhood revitalization by making grants to support:  targeted housing rehabilitation, market-building that promotes neighborhood assets, and housing counseling to prevent or mitigate the effects of foreclosure.  BNC also provides staff leadership and coordination for the Baltimore Homeownership Preservation Coalition as part of our foreclosure-prevention efforts.

  • Promoting transit-centered community development by making investments to attract new housing and retail and to improve neighborhood access to regional jobs and other essential neighborhood amenities in Central Baltimore (Penn Station), in Southwest Baltimore (West Baltimore MARC station) and along the proposed Red Line Corridor.

  • Building nonprofit capacity by providing grants to support internships with community-oriented nonprofits, consultants to address core organizational issues of grantees, and training opportunities that build the skills of executive directors and senior staff.

BNC has provided crucial early support for significant community development initiatives, such as Healthy Neighborhoods Inc., the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance-Jacob France Institute (BNIA-JFI), the Maryland Asset Building and Community Development (ABCD) Network, and the Maryland Housing Counselors Network.
